Burt Galaway papers 1971-1979

Galaway's papers reflect his involvement in the organization and operations of the Professional Association of Treatment Homes (PATH), a Twin Cities based foster care treatment project controlled by the foster parents rather than by social services agencies. Also included in the collection are Galaway's records from the Minnesota Restitution Center, an offender parole- rehabilitation project based on restitution of damages to the victim.

In 1973, the Minnesota Corrections Department began experimenting with an alternative to incarceration for selected property offenders through the opening of the Minnesota Restitution Center, a limited residential program with 22 beds in Minneapolis. Burton Galaway was born on May 15, 1937. He earned his B.A. in sociology from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1959, his M.S. from the School of Social Work at Columbia University in 1961 and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1980. He joined the staff at the University of Minnesota in 1970 as an instructor.
